# ALGEBRA STORY PROBLEMS ?

Hi

Can you help me with these algebra story problems?

1.) Anna, Bill, Carla, and Doug are siblings. Each lives in a different state beginning with the letter W. Neither sister lives in a state containing two words. Bill lives to the west of his sisters. Anna doesn't cross the Mississippi River when she visits Doug. Which state does each sibling live in?

2.) Sandy spent one tenth of the money in her purse for lunch. She then spent $23.50 on a gift for her brother, then half of what she had left on a new CD. If Sandy has $13 left in her purse, how much money did she have in it before lunch?

3.) Don sold one fifth as many raffle tickets as Carlita. Carlita sold 3 times as many as Rhonda. Rhonda sold 7 fewer than Russel. If Russel sold 12 tickets, how many did Don sell?

4.) Harold has a dog, a parrot, a goldfish, and a hamster. Their names are JT, Izzy, Arf, And Blinky. Izzy has neither feathers nor fins. Arf can't bark. JT weighs less than the four legged pets. Neither the goldfish nor the dog has the longest name. Arf and BLinky don't get along well with the parrot. What is each pets name?

5.) Paul buys a coupon for $20 from a local theater that allows him to see movies for half price over the course of one year. The cost of seeing a movie is normally $ 7.50. What is the least number of movies Paul would have to see to pay less than the normal price per movie?

1.

Okay. The four states beginning with W are West Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

So. In the first clue, we find out that either Bill or Doug lives in West Virginia. Bill lives to the west of his sisters, but that's not possible if he lives in West Virginia (none of these states are east of W.V.), so Doug lives in West V.

Anna doesn't cross the Miss. R. to visit Doug, so she must be East of it, in Wisconsin.

Bill still has to live further west than Carla, so he must be in Washington while she lives in Wyoming.

2.) Sandy spent one tenth of the money in her purse for lunch. She then spent $23.50 on a gift for her brother, then half of what she had left on a new CD. If Sandy has $13 left in her purse, how much money did she have in it before lunch?

Okay, start with the end result. 13 dollars is half of what Sandy had left after the CD, so before the CD, she had 26 dollars.

26 + 23.50 = Her money before the gift = 49.50

49.50 is 90% of her original total, so divide that by 9 and then multiply by 10.

The answer is 55 dollars.

3.

Russel: 12 tickets

Rhonda: 12 - 7 = 5 tickets

Carlita: 5 x 3 = 15 tickets

Don: 15 x 1/5 = 3 tickets

4.

First clue tells us that Izzy is a dog or a hamster.

Second clue tells us that Arf is a parrot, goldfish or hamster.

The third clue tells us that JT is a parrot or a goldfish (not four legged)

Fourth clue tells us that Blinky is a parrot or a hamster.

Blinky is not a parrot (we see in the last clue). He must therfore be a hamster. Arf can't be a parrot or a hamster then, so he must be a goldfish. JT can't be a goldfish if Arf is, so he must be a parrot, which leaves Izzy as a dog.

5.

7.50x = 3.25x + 20

therefore

3.25x = 20

x = 5.71428571

Round that up, and he has to see at least 6 movies.

Since it says 3 feet = 1 inch on the scale, 36 feet of the real sailboat would be 12 inches on the scale. 54 feet of the real sailboat would be 18 inches on the scale. You just divide the length and height of the sailboat by 3 and the answer is your scale "model" (in inches).
