If boiling water kills most bacteria, then why isn't it bad if you drink the dead bacteria?

Like if you were stuck with drinking lake water when camping or something, would the water still be safe after boiling? The bacteria is still in there and it just sounds nasty...

Kind of like taking a bath...sitting in your dirty water and reusing it to wash your hair :/

Boiling water kills bacteria, but not the toxins some bactera can create, same as leaving a chicken at room temp for a week then cooking it for 4 hours in a hot oven. You may have killed the bugs but it can still make you ill.

Its good to boil the water because when they are newborns their bodys are still kinda weak. And sometimes the water may have diseases in it or something bad. So if you boil it it will get rid of all the things that could hurt the baby. Novaleigh

Sometimes even boiling water doesn't make it safe because of heat stable bacterial metabolites (toxins) remaining in the water.
