A lot of people said yes... I'm surprised...

While R. Lee Ermie did a great job of portraying Marine Recruit life it's also made so that people that aren't in the Marine Corps will understand...

In the movie R. Lee Ermie was actually understandable... in real life Drill Instructors are slightly less.

    It's a little different.

The movie is very accurate with regard to the facilities, the training regimen, the obstacle courses, and the standards that apply to their lifestyles. When I watched "FMJ" after basic I kept saying, "Hey, I did that!"

Because the movie is Vietnam era, there are of course differences in the weapons and uniforms. The Drill Sergeants / Instructors are not as harsh or vulgar as R Lee Ermy, but the movie does a good job of reflecting the trainer/trainee relationship and the Drill's uncompromising attitude.

They can't hit you anymore. I felt sorry for Private Pile before I went to boot camp. After I went, I thought the guy was a total idiot. It's not that hard to follow the rules, especially after they're being barked at you multiple times a day. There's always some idiot that just doesn't get it though...

Full Metal Jacket is fairly realistic. The part where they do the "this is my rifle, this is my gun; this is for shooting, this is for fun, is something which has happened in Marine Corps recruit training. For a movie it was pretty good. The movie goes off the deep end once they get to Vietnam.

It gives you a good insight of boot camp but it is not the real thing it is just a movie.

Yes and no. It really depends on which branch of the military. It also depends on whether or not you stand out during boot camp. If they don't know who you are, things are pretty smooth.
