the heating element to my tumble dryer only goes off if the door is open?

the element to the dryer heats up even if the control settin is on zero only way it stops heating up is to leave the door open and also the temp whilst drying clothes seems to be cooler as its not drying clothes as quick as it used to

    You need a new thermostat. If the dryer is over 10 years old, you might want to replace the heating element too, or just get a new dryer. Once you start having problems like this, one fix usually leads to another.
