In my opinion, R. E. Lee was the most talented General of the civil war. If he had the same resources and number of soldiers that the north had he would have been insurmountable. As it is it was a close run thing there for a while. Consider that Lee was always at a disadvantage with numbers and so on yet won so many of the early battles. It was mainly due to attrition that wore his army down. He couldn't replace his best Generals, his fighting soldiers or resupply the army. Grant on the other hand knew how to use his numbers and almost unlimited resources. As Lincoln once said, Grant knew how to do the terrible math. That being said, Grant was the one that had the brutal resolve to push the war effort forward to it's ultimate victory.

Robert E Lee was the talented General and but for the lack of a proper army of men might have won the war. Ulysses Grant had the manpower and all the backing and won.

Robert E. Lee was more talented he is known as 1 of the best stragetists in the world and he was lincoln's first choice for a general

    Undoubtedly Lee.

He fought off a much larger, better equipped and supplied army for over 3 years once he was appointed commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. A victory at either Antietam or Gettyburg (neither of which was beyond the bounds of possibility) would almost certainly have resulted in Confederate victory in the Civil War, thus changing world history.

As for Grant, his strategy was based entirely on bludgeoning the Confederacy into defeat using his vastly superior resources, which takes no great insight or ability as a military commander.

Neither one was untalented. Robert E. Lee, since he had to deal with smaller resources and beat superior forces over and over again, was probably more talented. US Grant was humiliated more than once by Lee but beat him as much by sheer persistence and superior resources than anything else.

From day one, stalemate possibly, yet with much greater death. purely a reminder, if Lee had no longer ordered wooden's charge and had withdrawn early from Gettysburg, he could have at the back of schedule the conflict some greater months and in that element Lincoln could have enable the south go. He became into getting plenty hate from mothers over the death toll, he became into approximately to grant it up. rather undesirable section is that Lee attacked Gettysburg reason his troops necessary the shoes there, however the Governor of NC had better than adequate and purely refused to proportion with every physique yet his state infantrymen.

Robert E. Lee fought off a much more massive army with a smaller, poorly-equipped army.

Lee was much more talented. He almost always fought from a manpower and technological disadvantage.

Here is a good article on Lee:

US Grant, but only because he had more resources. If they had the exact same number of resources, then it would be a draw. Both men were willing to sacrifice their soldiers to get the job done.
