What are the British school year equivalent of American grades?

For example American grades go K-12 with 9-12 being high school. 9th grade being about 14 yr olds.

I know the British say they are in year.....but I don't know how they match up.

Update:

nursery school is before kindergarten for children aged 3-4

    Year 7 = 6th Grade

Year 8 = 7th Grade and so on

You start High school in Year 7. So 6th Grade,if you like. Also, we don't call Kinder garden Kinder garden. We call it nursery or play school.

    Preschool - Nursery

    Pre-Kindergarten - Reception

    Kindergarten - Year 1

    1st grade - Year 2

    2nd grade - Year 3

    3rd grade - Year 4

    4th grade - Year 5

    5th grade - Year 6

    6th grade - Year 7

    7th grade - Year 8

    8th grade - Year 9

    9th grade/Freshman - Year 10

    10th grade/Sophomore - Year 11

    11th grade/Junior - Year 12/Lower Sixth

    12th grade/Senior - Year 13/Upper Sixth

Then at age 18, you can go to university in both countries.
