What are dependant and independant variables?

Im doing a project for science and its seeing which type of footwear or shoe helps you run faster. so ive got like 5 pairs of shoes and im running over 30m with 3 minute breaks but when i go to write up my experiment i dont know wat the variables are? help please.

Independent variable is the aspect which you change in your experiment which in your case is the shoes, as you use 5 different pairs of shoes

Dependent variable is what will be varied in your experiment which in this is the speed
