Free for 30 days. Basic chess instruction. Start with the Novice Modules and progress. Best way to learn chess hands down outside of an instructor.

Chessmaster, without a doubt. It is the most popular chess software in the world. Has all sorts of added features for learners. But don't take my word for it, research it. For professional, top players, it is ChessBase. But any software, set at a low level will do. I like Chess Titans, that comes bundled with W7, for it's simplicity, design, and Ctrl + z to take back moves.
