I've been in the Home Security business for years, and can tell you right now, you probably don't need a system. Unless you live in a very shady neighborhood and have a real problem with people breaking in, it is not worth the money. You probably won't use the system every day, and after the excitement of having a system wears off, you'll forget to arm it, and it will go unused for months. You will be paying anywhere between $34.99-$49.99 per month, and the contracts are very harsh. To keep from voiding the warranty on the system, you would have to test it every month, and after 90 days or so, you have to pay for any equipment that has to be replaced. Some companies have seasonal sales and they will offer you free equipment as long as you're an "advertising home" which is just a ploy to make you feel special. Also the contract you sign will be for at least 3 years, during which if you try to cancel, they will make you pay off the remainder of the contract. Very few people actually get their money's worth from these systems, and I highly recommend just getting a sign to stick in your yard. It's much cheaper, and almost as effective.
Yes you do get free equipment from some companies, unfortunately eskie got screwed over by the sales rep, and he gave her the bare minimum of equipment. She could have gotten more for free. Also its a key fob. Not a key bob, and if you are going to get a system, yes they are worth it. It's like a key remote for your car, so it saves you having to put in a code on the panel. As far as sensors go, there are door/window sensors, motion sensors, glassbreak sensors, smoke detectors, key fobs, and medical pendants.
