Is organized religion holding the world back?

Update:

Sophia... a valid point. However, what about how many christians, including many prominent political figures, believe in an end-of-the-world and an afterlife? Don't you think that belief would have an impact on how they act in their daily lives (and deal with serious issues such as war and global warming?

    Probably.

Fortunately God does not ask for religion, but a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ.

Niccolò Machiavelli, at the beginning of the sixteenth century said: "We Italians are irreligious and corrupt above others... because the church and her representatives have set us the worst example."[7] To Machiavelli, religion was merely a tool, useful for a ruler wishing to manipulate public opinion.[

Can you imagine how far science would be without the Holy Church holding back science in it's infancy? If religion didn't exist we would be much farther down the road towards where we need to be.

    Organised religion is an anachronism.

The sooner the population on this insignificant speck in the universe realise this, the better.

    Organized religion?

    Yes and no.

I've observed that during economic hardship (cough, right now), people find support with members of their church. It's a community of people who share similar beliefs and help one another. Unfortunately, they tend to alienate themselves from other communities and are resilient to people who do not share their faith/beliefs.

Everyone needs something to rely on and someone to believe in. That is their business and how they want to worship or praise them is their business. Organized religion is their way of doing that!
