Why arent hispanics called Spanish-Americans?

In the same tradition of

German-Americans

Italian-Americans

Irish-Americans

Update:

Lex, that doesnt change the point im trying to make..Why are Spaniard decendents called Spanish-Americans? I could care less about Portugese, Irish, ot African..

Update 2:

Im a "white" Spainard from Spain, and Spanish-American seems like it would be more accurate.

Update 3:

What the hell are you talking about Taylor V? Spanish means a citizen of the country SPAIN!!!..You know, in Europe..We also have a language called Spanish.

Update 4:

Taylor V. Im an indigenous Spainard. We seem to be saying the same thing. If Spainards are Spainards all over the world..Spainards should have thier own identity like Spainard-American, as opposed to hispanic.

Update 5:

Lex: just because one takes on a new culture dosent change their ancestry.

Because they're not. "Spanish" or "Spaniard" refers to someone called Spain. Hispanics are referred to as Latin-Americans....Americans with roots in Latin America.

Not all hispanics have spanish ancestry. Latin America as a whole is a very diverse region, with many people of African and Native American descent, as well as Europeans of German, Irish, French, Italian and Portuguese descent in addition to Spaniards. Vincente Fox, president of Mexico, is half Irish.

Most of us are either Mestizo or Mulatto or Triracial. Pure races are uncommon, least of all pure Spaniards. Bigger than that our culture is radically different from that of Spain.

Anyway, even the spaniard-descended Latin Americans come from new countries and have new identities. They no longer share the culture of spain exclusively. Yes they're spaniards by descent, but that's long gone.

Because hispanics aren't Spanish. They're Hispanic. Hispanic and Spanish are two different things. Spanish refers to someone from Spain, the country in Europe. Hispanic and Latin are like South America, Mexico, and a few Islands. Hispanic and Spanish are two different things. Just because they speak Spanish, doesn't make the Spanish. Us here in the US speak English, but we aren't all English.

Spanish = Spaniard = Native of Spain.

    Most Hispanics are Mestizo/as.
