Carter by far. He was a visionary trying to end our dependence on foreign energy, and along came Reagan with his credit card, making people think we were returning to a time that never was.
If the hostage crisis had not happened in Iran, Carter would have easily won re-election. None of these Reagan worshippers remember the Camp David accords. Israelis now flock to Egyptian beaches as welcome tourists instead of the two sending tanks and fighter jets at each other.
Under Reagan, somehow everyone forgets MORE Americans were taken hostage in the middle east once word got out among the terrorist groups that Reagan was paying ransoms. Yes, Mr. Tough Guy-Stare 'em-Down ransomed hostages like a sissy. Carter had the legendary Green Beret Bo Gritz attempt a rescue mission in Tehran but the sandstorm knocked down the helicopters. Not one Keyboard Kommando in here would dare call Gritz a sissy to his face.
Reagan was showing signs of Alzheimer's during his second term. The well-written book "Landslide" details how Don Regen was an evil shadow president who allowed the entire Iran-Contra scandal to happen, and how Howard Baker taking over as chief of staff from Regen saved the presidency and perhaps the nation. Ronald Reagan was described by insiders as falling asleep at every meeting and understanding very little of what was being explained. He had early stage Alzheimer's. The book was published before the family publicly announced it.
My father had Alzheimer's and like every family, looking back we saw signs years before the diagnosis but just thought it was an odd moment.
And yes, Lola, Reagan indeed gave tacit support to the apartheid government of South Africa.
