Two teenagers had been brought into the ER after a drug related incident one white and one black. Mark had assumed the black kid was the drug dealer when in fact, it was the white kid. It is insinuated in the episode that his assumption that the black kid was the drug dealer, who was actually just an innocent bystander, may have resulted in him giving the white kid preferential treatment. The black teenager eventually died in the ER. It wasn't ascertained that the kid wouldn't have died no matter what.

In later episodes, Mark is beaten in the men's room by the brother of the black kid who died in retaliation.

Wasn't Chris Law, the brother of Kenny Law, the basketball player. Said to have been a serial attacker going around attacking doctors.

These answers are incorrect. The real attacker was never found; Mark Greene confronted Chris Law in Episode 10 of Season 4, realizing that it wasn't Law who attacked him.

The reason for the attack was also not explained, but it was established that many people leave the ER agitated or frustrated for one reason or another.

It is stated explicitly that it was a "random act" of aggression and not Chris Law, the victim's brother, as was

    expected/suspected upon first viewing.

Someone recalled Mark having a redeeming talk with Chris Law, revealing it was not he who beat up

    Mark, but indeed someone else.

The other answerer is correct...the only thing I would add is that the kid who died, was an all-star basketball player, straight laced and a good kid. If this even matters, the basketball players name was *Kenny Law* and his brother, *Chris Law* was the one that beat up Mark Green....Chris Law was played by Joe Torry....
