When I was a Student at Stanford University I heard (during a lecture) in a Sexual Behaviors class that taking prenatal vitamins when TTC it decreases the chances of complications such as Spina Bifida. Of coarse taking a prenatal vitamin will do nothing to help you conceive.
By the way studies have linked folic acid deficiency to various fetal anomalies. In particular, defects in the formation of the nervous system, spina bifida, anencephaly and other abnormalities of neural tube development may be increased in babies carried by women deficient in folic acid. So if you can't take Prenatals for any reason you should take some folic acid and eat plenty of leafy greens.
Edit: I'm really surprised at how many people here don't know the benefits of Prenatals. Folic acid, iron, and calcium content are especially important to the growing baby, that are so many problems a baby can have when a mother does not have a balanced diet. In the last 20 years the rate of mothers using prenatals has gone up 82% in the U.S. and the rate of new born deaths has gone down almost as much, that's no coincidence.
