    Its a vetting process,Supreme court judges(when appointed) are appointed for life.The only way to get new judges on there is if one decides to retire,or die.This is very important because the judges are their to interpret laws (by states)(and each states supreme court) on cases,to see if they are Constitutional.Lately(over the last 40 years) some judges have gone beyond their job description and created new laws(circumventing the Constitution and the Founding fathers) So Yes appointing a new judge is a very big deal,and reflects the President(and His Morals and ethics) on whom He appoints.
