An untrained voice has less effective, or less appealing, properties. A lesser trained singer would have one or more of these things: nasally sound, little breath support (would sound airy and too breathy), shoulders would move up and down with breath, possibly not be able to hold long notes (or at least not successfully or prettily), the sound would come from the back of their throat/vocal chords (would also sound airy, greater chance of cracking), would have trouble staying on pitch (would go sharp or flat), glottal stops would occur often when not wanted (would sound like it does when you say plosives [the sound is cut off and it would be like a break in the sound]), the singer would sing under or in the pitch causing the sound to not be as good as it could, and much more (these are the most common and more general problems.
I hope this answered your question!! :DSource(s): Classical voice training.
