idling. That is how hybrids save gasoline- they shut the engine off when you stop. Then when you accelerate they do it with an electric motor until you reach a certain speed.
Idling at a traffic light can cut your mileage one tenth of a mile per gallon , you lose 1 mile per gallon every 10 traffic lights you stop at.

idling.
you don't use as much gas as you think when starting. starting an engine uses as much gas as approximately 8 seconds of idling. of course engines will vary slightly, but they should all be in the same range. so basically if your gonnna idle for longer than 8 seconds, its better to turn off your engine. common sense, why idle? why keep your engine on if your not moving your car?
