i need a low stress way to make friends. any ideas?

i am not a very confident person and i only have one real friend, (but i think im losing that one). i need more so i don't lose my mind! : ) i am very soft spoken maybe even shy especially in social settings. i have to deal with the public at work sometimes and dont have much trouble there but i don't a choice there. i have to talk to them. any ideas?
