The appearance of a monk in England at the beginning of the millennia
just ending altered the insularity of that island in a few months and sent
hordes thundering off to the Crusades filled with a piety and zeal which , before his arrival, were markedly absent.

1.The appearance of a monk in England at the beginning of the millennia just ending =>一個僧侶在千禧年剛結束之開頭(也就是西元100X年)的出現=>本句當主詞片語
2.altered
3.the insularity of that island =>
4.in a few months =>在幾個月之內=>修飾ALTER之副詞子句
5.sent hordes thundering off to the Crusades filled with a piety and zeal=>
6.which=>代表5.的關係代名詞
7.before his arrival=>在這僧侶來此之前
8.were markedly absent=>

「The appearance of a monk in England at the beginning of the millennia
just ending」 (以上是主詞) 「altered」(動詞) the insularity of that island (受詞) in a few months (副詞) and (連接詞,看後面的結構是複合句) sent (動詞,連接詞後省略了主詞,和前面一句是同一個主詞)
hordes thundering off to the Crusades filled with a piety and zeal which (這個which代表的是什麼,要再看一下,不過反正就是關代限定用法,可能代表的是前面在and後面的一個名詞或是and後面的整件事) , before his arrival (插入句) , were markedly absent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
再來第二階段整理,把省略的東西全寫出來,這樣之後您應該可以看的懂了。
The appearance of a monk in England at the beginning of the millennia
(which was : which= millennia) just ending altered the insularity of that island 「in a few months」(修飾整句) and (前句的主詞) sent
hordes thundering off to the Crusades (which were) filled with a piety and zeal which (應該就是指and後面這件事=送人去參加十字軍), before his arrival (那個monk), were markedly absent.
這樣有懂了嗎? 要我翻譯也是可以,不過我相信我上面這樣分析後您應該可以自已翻譯了。
能不能順便告訴我出處?
