    They say:

FreeBMD is an ongoing project, the aim of which is to transcribe the Civil Registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales, and to provide free Internet access to the transcribed records. It is a part of the FreeUKGEN family, which also includes FreeCEN (Census data) and FreeREG (Parish Registers). To search the records that have so far been transcribed by FreeBMD click on the Search button below.

The recording of births, marriages and deaths was started in 1837 and is one of the most significant resources for genealogical research. The transcribing of the records is carried out by teams of dedicated volunteers and contains index information for the period 1837-1983. PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE NOT YET TRANSCRIBED THE WHOLE INDEX. A breakdown by event and year can be viewed here

The FreeBMD Database was last updated on Sun 19 Jul 2009 and currently contains 170,670,560 distinct records (219,149,395 total records).

If that isn't what you wanted, a country and state, plus a time frame, would help. there isn't a free, current, nation-wide one for the USA or Canada or any other English-speaking country.

Birth records (certificates) are not public documents. Every state has laws relating to who can access them (usually immediate person or parents). For businesses that directly find the record FOR YOURSELF, the fee charged is valid, since they "link" from here to there.

In some cases.. historical certificates are past the time limits for restriction, and they can be found online. It is random.. you have to specify a place and year. Some states will have it, some won't.
