conservatives are supposed to honor values like individual liberty and free markets while being very suspicious of government. however, this does not seem to hold for current conservatives, who only like to harp about the markets when it suits them and when it doesn't will call for bailouts or protection. also, even though conservatives are supposed to loathe big government and usually show said loathing through rantings against any kind of taxation or other government interference, when it comes to the great government intervention of all, namely, war, they will not only be silent to those interventions but actively cheer them on.
you see, conservatives don't hate big government, and they don't love free markets. they love big government when it helps them, and they hate free markets when it hurts them meaning they'll call for all kinds of loopholes and special clauses for their own protection.
when it comes to wars, the government they claim to be suspicious of can do no wrong (except for complains of not "fighting hard enough") and all of the sudden any criticism (legitimate or not) of government actions in times of war becomes "anti-american" - which is supposed to be like anti-semitism or something.
however, the term "anti-" anything is usually only used in totalitarian societies. for example, the supreme crime in soviet russia was that of being "anti-soviet" or "anti-russian." thus, anyone who dared to criticize the dictatorial rule of lenin, stalin, or the communist party was labeled as "anti-soviet," tried on those grounds, and then sent off to siberia for a life of hard labor.
in other words, those who call themselves "conservative" are not classical liberals who love freedom and markets but rather conventional statists who love nothing more than to offer up apologetics for those in power, whether they be in government or in big business (often the same thing).
thus, when we hear rantings and ravings against chomsky calling him a communist or anti-semite or holocaust denier, we can undertake the required 5 seconds of logical reasoning it takes to totally debunk these statements and then go on with our lives.
