"Age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill" - What do you think about this quote?

It's saying wisdom (from age) and deceptive cunning (treachery) will always overcome youth (innocent naivety) and skill (knowledge). And it's right. It's kind of reminiscent of Sun Tzu's "Art of War", in which deception and trickery are praised as the highest and most effective forms of strategy against an opponent. It's pitting two opposites against each other, youth and age, and showing that in battle, although age may seem to have the clear disadvantage, such is the power of wit and intelligence (via trickery) it will win hands down. It's basically praising the power of intelligence and thought over brute force; mind over matter in other words, man's only source of dominion over the animal kingdom. Human civilization would seem to be proof of this saying.

I just saw a guy with this quote on his shirt and it got me thinking. Today we are seeing this philosophy in full effect seeing how the "me" generation is taking whatever they can with them, leaving the generations following with more of a struggle than they had to live through. Treachery- the gen "me" is flooding the workforce with illusions that gen "y" is lazy, doesn't set goals, has bad work ethic, wants everything handed to them, when really it's quite the opposite. Skill- We can do their job faster, and more efficient than they can and they know it. So they lie and deceive to keep their portion of the pie not thinking about how the generation before them made sacrifices to give the "me's" a better quality of life.

What I've found of this "me" generation is that their work ethic sucks, they are lazy, they take things for granted, and are slow at getting things done and they get paid more for doing it.

Well...here's something to take away, you will get older than you are now, and will have to depend on the younger generation at some point in time. Remember little poodle, treachery will only get you so far, the monkey has no alliance to you and will turn his back for a better deal.

Good versus bad.

And i am surprised that these were not mentioned in any of the answers;
having said that, a lot more can be said here;not least one's preference(for good or youth;or age and (bad) treachery).

anyone or any theory can "pit"something against another thing-even unwittingly.
(after learning that some here called a version of modern taught philosophy,"analytical",i challenged this with the more objective philosophy of, "critical rationalism").
And it seems that modern neo-darwinism (or some such modern way as witness the either-or-questions here on "answers")might have a powerful "say"on.....who is the so-called "best" that the question poses.
Of course,"posing"like this- i mean saying that one is good-and-better compared to the other(in this case,bad thing) could be a mistake;even a mistake which has been highlighted before.
And in saying as i did that this was a case of good-versus-bad,i very much think that it has been highlighted before.

Hi,
This is an excellent question for today - the quote refers to age and treachery (experience and cunning) is no match for youth and skill. This may have been true in the past - where information/technology was not readily available - but it is no longer true. Today's youth are smart, flexible, can put 2 & 2 together much quicker, resilient, etc. and today's society/economy/politics/etc. are moving so fast that experience does not count as much as the skills young folks have today. Would place my bet on the youth.

Something else to ponder: As we each age and our skills grow obsolete and our desirability as employees diminishes perhaps we only have ourselves to blame for failing to grow and advance beyond our position. If youth and skill threaten us why did we not position ourselves in control of just that youth? Why did we allow ourselves to be threatened by our own lack of progress?

It is wrong. In the short term age etc may overcome the virility of youth but life is a fair long race and strength will always prevail.

In the end youth wins in defiance of the aged who may be treacherous, but can't operate newer tools like a mobile telephone or TVs because of their outdated skills.
