Why was Senator Stuart Smalley wasting confirmation hearing time asking trivia questions about Perry Mason?

I could think of a lot better things to get some clarification from this woman on than 50 year old television trivia.

Republicans claim to be probing her personality and personal history, so why wouldn't a few questions about what inspired her to become a lawyer, prosecutor and then a judge be relevant? The answers to such questions could be just as insightful as the ones about her "wise Latina" comment in a lecture 10 years ago.

She told a story about watching an episode of Perry Mason when she was 9 years old and how she remembers that she thought it was amazing that although he lost the case, he was happy because justice was served.

Franken then light-heartedly mock-scolded her for not remembering the name of the episode and the White House for not properly preparing her.
