What's that song that talks about June 3rd and man jumping off a bridge?

It's by a women, it's real slow, sounds country, blue grass and it says how it's June 3rd and the family heard a man died, and talks about the kids working outside and the girl sees the man jump off the bridge.

I think you're talking about Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billy Jo. I always thought that was really depressing. It says, "Billy Jo McAllister jumped off the tallahatchie bridge." There was also a movie about this starring Robby Benson in the 70's. Quite dark and depressing.

As the others have said it is "Ode to Billy Joe"

"It was the third of June another sleepy dusty Delta day

I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was a bailin' hay

At dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat

And mama hollered at the backdoor y'all remember to wipe your feet

She said I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Wridge

Today Billie Joe Macallister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"

Yup, "Ode to Billy Joe" My son sings it at karaoke

My youngest daughter always calls her older sister

on the 3rd of June and they sing it. I have no

clue how that started but, they have done it

    every year for many years.

Now that it has come up, I have emailed her to ask

her how it got started. *G*

I get it, but it's kinda hard to follow because you didn't identify the wives as being the wives of the englishman and scotsman.
