Is it the US govt's right to demand that UBS hand over the names of 52k Americans who have accounts?
If they refuse to cooperate, wouldn't they be in violation of the Patriot Act? Otherwise how would we know if some of those 52,000 people are undercover members of Al-Qaida who are hiding funds that could be used in a future terrorist attack?
If UBS refuses, should Uncle Sam kick the bank out of the US and prohibit them from doing business with Americans? Then simultaneously put an embargo on Swiss banks prohibiting Americans from using them?
"In its brief, the Justice Department said that UBS had acknowledged that its bankers committed "very serious crimes on US soil" and had therefore subjected the bank to the full jurisdiction of US law."
If you disagree with all this, what should be done then about US lawbreakers? Or is tax evasion not a crime? What would the IRS do to you if you were caught evading taxes? Why should these people be treated differently?
