The latest trek feature was better paced, more action orientated and less cerebral than previous treks.
In addition, rather than being a re-boot, it is the same characters but in a different time line.
This means Kirk, who was the some of a great star fleet admiral, a golden boy, who, like the people of his generation travelled far and wide and had sex with the many, fathering many an illegitamate child.
On the other hand, the new Kirk, whose father is dead, grows up a true modern slacker, smart but not really determined to succeed. But when faced with the challenge will take the captains seat and prove himself.
Each character has the same, modern issues. Scotty is an unrecognised genius, bones is divorced and running away from his life and of course Spock is now more balanced between his human and vulcan parts.
Interesting version, though I feel a it doesn't have that much future. The original story, with a multiracial crew that included russians was great at its time. It was a radical and accurate vision of the future we have already achieved. But the lack of leading strong women doesn't fit today's world. Star trek the next generation at least put Klingon's on the command deck as part of the federation (at the same time as the soviet empire was collapsing).
This is star trek light. Exciting stories, good special effects, and it should all be a lot of fun.
