    Taps like bathroom sink taps? They probably have reflective infrared (IR) proximity sensors. An LED send an IR beam, which is reflected by the user's hand a,d received by an IR photodiode (or phototransistor).

    There's a lot of commercially available proximity sensors that use this principle. For example:

    * SFH9201 made by Osram. http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20Sheets/Osram%2...

    * QRB1113 made by Fairchild Semiconductor. http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/QR/QRB1113.pdf
