What happens if i refuse to register for the selective service?

You wont be able to get federal loans or grants.

You will be limited in jobs because all government jobs will require it and some civilian jobs ask based on the job, especially jobs that require a background check.

I have not seen them actually send people to jail over it, but legally they could.

Other then that, you have to establish yourself as an objector legally.

1) You can establish yourself as a conciensious objector. There is a process for it.
2) You wont be drafted. Something really really major would have to happen for that. It would be political suicide for a politician to do it. The Nation would have to be directly threatened for it to happen.

I don't see a point for not registering, since there will probably never be a draft again. I don't think you'll be sought out for max punishment, that huge fine and jail time. But being denied government and federal aid is a big YUP.
But, yeah, you can register as a conscientious objector, and *if* there were a draft you can get out of service.
