When a govt. constructs a road or builds a bridge they donot pay for it from their pocket. It is public's hard-earned tax money that goes for it.

Then why naming so many national properties after the members of only one family?

Why the sea-link is called Rajiv Gandhi bridge?

It should be called Veer Savarkar bridge.

This is Savarkar's resume:

The first political leader to daringly set Absolute Political Independence as India's goal (1900).

The first Indian political leader to daringly perform a bonfire of foreign (English) clothes (1905).

The first Indian to organize a revolutionary movement for India's Independence on an international level (1906).

The first political prisoner whose daring escape and arrest on French soil became a cause celebre in the International Court of Justice at The Hague. This case was mentioned in many International Treaties at that time (1910).

The first Indian leader who successfully started -

A Ganeshotsava open to all Hindus including ex-untouchables (1930).

Interdining ceremonies of all Hindus including ex-untouchables (1931).

"Patitpavan Mandir", open to all Hindus including ex-untouchables (22 February 1931).

A cafe open to all Hindus including ex-untouchables (01 May 1933).

The first political prisoner in the world who was sentenced to Transportation for Life twice, a sentence unparalled in the history of the British Empire.

The first political leader to embrace death voluntarily by way of Atma Samarpan in the highest tradition of Yoga (1966).

Whereas Rajiv Gandhi was a politician who has been charged with corruption cases of the highest kind.

These charges were levelled by his own Finance Minister.

Rajiv Gandhi lost an election and when he died he was not a PM.

Rajiv Gandhi's disastrous Srilanka policy was the reason behind his death. He cant be called a martyr.

His wrong foreign policy cost lives of many Indian soldiers in Srilanka whose death wass much more loss to the nation than Rajiv Gandhi's death.

Rajiv Gandhi moved away from Congressi socialism and started open economy, A MOVE WHICH WAS PROPAGATED BY DR. SHYAMA PRASAD MUKHERJEE WAY BACK IN 1948.

So whose contribution to the nation is more?

Apart from the fact that Rajiv Gandhi already has many things & awards named after him?

Update 2:

@ VIGNA, & V, why not ? Any true hero who has been neglected will do.

Update 3:

EDIT : @ ap, It is great to know that you donot consider Savarkar a hero who was a freedom fighter but value Rajiv Gandhi's contributions whose 5 years of prime ministerial tenure was scandalised by the Bofors arms deal scam.

Update 4:

EDIT : @ LAY, yes, right that the bridge will be called Savarkar bridge was almost finalised by Pawar until he realised that he needs Congress & Sonia Gandhi to stay in power.

It is a cheap mentality to usurp the properties of others and europeans as christian missionaries are great in usurping even the names of Hindoos, with the glaring example of sonia as a european.

Now that LTTE and Prabakaran are no more, the coward and back-stabbing UPA/congress is resurrecting rajiv, by naming any 'brick and mortar works' like bridge after rajiv. Soon, the same UPA/congress will blast the brigde to kill Hindoos using the bridge, putting blame on LTTE and linking once again rajiv, IPKF and LTTE.

UPA/congress is such a political fraud on Hindoos that the bridge would have been actually planned to be named after 'kasab', the 21st century forerunner to attack Mumbai from outside after the 15th century christian missionaries, who demolished so many Hindoo symbols in Goa and other nearby places. But first lend an equally an obnoxious name, against which naturally a hue and cry will be made and then name it after still worse a person like kasab.

The slave families of slave dynasaty of sultana sonia can only name the bridge in the chief slave's name, rajiv, since even while during the times of the emergency-imposing mother-in-law's presence, sonia silenly moved matters to occupy the centre stage as the real sultana at Delhi. In her sultanate, there is also a gey-ed (to rhyme with 'learned') judge of delhi , who declared all congress men are 'gay, by approving 'gay marriages'like items; if all congress men are gay, the guess that it will be 'lesbian' in case of the sultana will also be correct.

    I agree with you

Though I do not personally feel offended if the Bridge is named after Rajiv Gandhi being an Icon of young Indians

But I feel following gr8 personalities of could have been considered in naming the bridge

    Maha Rana Pratap

    Shiva Ji

    Veer Sawarkar

    Bhagat Singh

    Lala Lajpatrai

i think you and Robin are going over the extreme. Where are talking about regular people, not crackheads or unkempt homeless individuals. Though there is a limit with admiration. I have complemented some babies but i never touched them unless we were sitting in a comfortable environment and the mother/father was there and the baby came over to play with me. i may shake his little hand but i would never touch a newborn infant due to germs and their weak immune systems. Also because i know the parent may not want me to hold it or touch it. Though what is wrong with getting a compliment about your baby? This is what people do. They talk mushy talk to babies because they are so cute. But if someone said your kid looked horribly disfigured, you would take offense so what is it that you want? However every parent is different and i wouldn't mind someone touching my baby's cheek especially an old person if i sense it is all in good company. Now some people go to the extreme and try and hold the baby without asking, kiss it, feed it which i can agree is unacceptable. But what kind of people actually are that bold to try and touch all over your kid like you describe? I think it's a bit exaggerated. Though i can understand where u are coming from. Some parents are just protective of their child.

I wasn't aware they're naming that bridge as Rajiv Gandhi bridge! That's another one in the Rajiv G. series, isn't it? What's absolutely disgusting here is that Nehru-Gandhi party is naming landmarks in a person's name who, before 1984 had nothing to do with politics or social work and who spent only 6 years at politics, with the highest watermark being a shameful scandal he was allegedly involved in. Just because he was young and looked smart doesn't mean he energized the youth or infused any revolutionary spirit in people. You can respect such a person and name a few landmarks in his name but upto a certain limit, exceeding it (which has already happened) is like insulting people like Savarkar and Vajpayee who dedicated their whole lives to serving people and nation building.

If educated persons could not understand the real facts of this Gandhi family worship by Congress who claims to fight English regime to free India ! Can you expect by common person who have no knowledge of History and Psychology of these stunt of Congress ?

"Yaha to jiski lathi usiki bhesh" like attitude we can see. What are the achievements of Sonia,Rahul and Priyanka towards India ?Just enjoy the surname and foolishness of some emotional people who see them as their God.

"Neev ki eat kabhi bhi dikhlai nahi deti, kangure ki eato ki sabhi tarife karte hai, jabki ye kangure neev ki eato par tike hote hai "

We are living in a immature Democracy where people are blank about the meaning of real democracy. They are voting on money matter,or religious matter,or cast matter,or short terms gain only.So this family will enjoy the innocence of India people along with Congressi.

If Veer Savarkar ji's name they find them to some political loses than so many Historical persons are their who have contributed a lot to Hindustan. They can choose among them who really repersent the status of great achiever for the country.

Veer Savarkar did you say? Does the dynasty know any person of that name? Ironically it was Sharad Pawar who made the suggestion and he was a critic of the dynasty couple of years ego. Politics is strange when things come to get their own things getting done. The irony is that he is called thee Maratha leader !!

Goes to show that the Nehru/Gandhi dynasty uses public money to shamelessly promote themselves. There are literally thousands of government projects named after this family. This is a kind of advertisement for one family. The poor and illiterate don't know that the projects come from the taxes that people are paying. They think all the projects are being done by this family. Free advertising for the Congress party and one Dynasty.

This unfairly influences public opinion in one dynasty's favour. There is a law which states that any party cannot use government funds for self promotion but this is being done rampantly by the Congress party.

We even have roads named after Aurangzeb in India. Shame on India to have a road named after a SOB that murdered thousands of innocent Indians.

PS I love Vighneshwar's idea. It would be a fitting tribute to this Hero of India and remind Mumbaikers of his sacrifice.

I agree. Excess of everything is bad.

It can be simply named as Bandra-Worli Way.

Earlier names were: Rohtak Road, Agra Road etc.
