Nestle Cookie Dough Recalled for E. coli Concerns

LITTLE FALLS, N.J., June 19 -- The FDA has warned consumers not to eat prepackaged refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough because of a risk of bacterial contamination.
Nestle has initiated a voluntary recall of all varieties of the product because of possible contamination with Escherichia coli O157:H7.
The FDA and CDC are conducting an epidemiological study to investigate 66 reports of illness in 28 states since March. There have been no deaths, but 25 people have been hospitalized, including seven with hemolytic uremic syndrome.
The agencies informed Nestle that the illnesses might be related to the consumption of raw cookie dough made by the company, although the bacteria have not been detected in any of its products.
Nestle stressed that raw cookie dough should not be eaten, as is indicated on the packaging.
All products subject to the recall -- including cookie bar dough, cookie dough tub, cookie dough tube, limited edition cookie dough items, seasonal cookie dough, and Ultimates cookie bar dough, should be thrown away, the FDA said.
Nestle, however, asked consumers to return the withdrawn products to their local food stores for a refund.
The FDA said any consumers who have recently eaten the recalled products and have abdominal cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea should contact their physicians immediately.
