Vanderbilt was like that in the 70's...it's totally different now. Over 19,000 kids applied for admission this past year. Vanderbilt is one of the underrated gems, it's part of a new elite group called the "New Ivies" by Newsweek along with Duke, Stanford, Cal-tech, etc.
Vandy kids are not only very smart but they are also very outgoing. Social life is a big part of this school and it's intertwined with cultural events, sports events, invited speakers, organizational club events, and greek life.
In addition, vanderbilt has a new Expanded Financial Aid Program so that there are no more loans -- all have been replaced with grants, which don't have to be paid back ever
