What does "darkness" mean to you?

A question without a specific answer.

Scientifically speaking, darkness doesn't really exist. According to what I've learned, what we may confuse darkness with is actually shadow, which is just a lower level of light that humans aren't able to see as well in.

But, poetically, to me, darkness means "nothing" or "empty". Like, "Where my heart once lain, darkness now looms", meaning an empty-hearted or unfeeling person.

What is your meaning of "darkness"?

    Hello,

Darkness is the absence of light, and one of the basal states of nature.

Look into the night sky, and you will see abundant darkness, and minuscule light. This state is prevalent in daytime, but goes unnoticed for the sunshine.

Any emotional terms attached to it are the reflections of the user of those terms, rather that any state or quality of darkness itself.

    Before anything was, darkness existed.

What do you mean to the darkness?

BTW a "vacuum" isn't a vaccum either since even in "empty" space there's always a scrap of energy here or there, or some stray particle. Can you form the notion of absolute nothingness - call this the VOID: A complete absence of anything at all, including even empty space, and even the passage of time. The mind reels.

It's funny how words that used to have only one obvious meaning, now have so many different meanings. Usually, I think of darkness as nighttime, or something shrouded in a foreboding feeling. But sometimes, I simply think of the fantasy meaning of darkness, referring to dark wizards and mages who cast deadly spells. That's what playing Final Fantasy will do to you! It also seems that something can be dark, and yet not be necessarily "evil."

In answer, I offer the lyrics to a wonderful song you might wish to listen to someday:

    Darkness, Darkness

    by Jesse Colin Young

    Darkness, darkness, be my pillow,

Take my hand, and let me sleep.

In the coolness of your shadow,

In the silence of your deep.

    Darkness, darkness, has me yearning,

    For things that cannot be.

Keep me my mind from constant turning,

Toward the things it cannot see,

    Things it cannot see,

    Things it cannot see.

    Darkness, darkness, long and lonesome,

As the day brings the pain.

I have found the edge of stillness,

I live in the depth of fear.

    Darkness, darkness, be my blanket,

    Cover me with endless night,

Take away the pain that flows away,

    Fill the emptiness with bright,

    Emptiness with bright,

    Emptiness with bright.

    Darkness, darkness, be my pillow,

Take my hand, and let me sleep.

In the coolness of your shadow,

In the silence of your deep.

    Darkness, darkness, be my blanket,

    Cover me with endless night,

Take away the pain that flows away,

    Fill the emptiness with bright,

    Emptiness with bright,

    Emptiness with bright.

    Very similar to your definition.

And I would add hopeless despair because there is no possibility of light - ever. The light of the sun, of another's laughter, of color, of an emancipating idea.

    beauty

she lay me down at night

    if only without light

    I feel the darkness breath

    if only I don't fight

    I assure she won't bite

if only you wrap her tight

we'd stare deep at the sun

If only it weren't so bright
