Half of Joan's video collection...?

Half of Joan's video collection consists of 8 science fiction movies. How many movies does Joan have?

I know the answer is 16. I just am not sure how to set it up in an equation!

    Hi,

Let the number of movies Joan has be x.

It is given that half of Joan's video collection consists of 8 science fiction movies.

In mathematical notation, half (1/2) of Joan's video collection (x) consists of 8 science fiction movies.

    or

    (1/2) of x = 8

    x/2 = 8

    Multiply both sides by 2.

    2 * x/2 = 8 * 2

    x = 16

    Hope this helps!

    Edit:

    Just to add.

    (1/2) of x = 8

In this case, "of" is similar to multiply. So,

    (1/2) of x = 8

    can be represented as

    (1/2) * x = 8

    8 videos divideby one half.................or 8/(1/2)
