Why do people think sociopaths are cool?

I have noticed that the media kind of glorifies sociopaths, and people think they are cool. Why do people think sociopaths are cool but other antisocial diseases, like aspergers, are uncool? They both make people act differently... And if someone can explain the difference I would be greatful :)

people don't know the difference between a narcissist, sociopath or psychopath.

Narcissist are the typical school bullies, in adult form. love being in the spotlight and getting praise, love competing over any and everything, love to put everyone down, love to see others suffer and upset, love to basically dish out what they cant take back in. Narcissist are in all forms of the word - hypocrites!

Sociopaths surprisingly do not start out violent as narcissist and psychopaths do. Sociopaths generally "mimic" what you show them first. so it can seem like they are destructive but they are just giving you a taste of your own medicine but because they have such intense hatred for others they end up going overboard and killing when that wasn't the intention. Sociopaths lack empathy, yes, but they usually have low profile lives and don't care about anyone (literally!), until you try to block them from a goal.

Psychopaths are more suicidal and homicidal than the three. Combine a Narcissist & Sociopath then you got a Psychopath on your hands. They are competitive bullies like Narcs and mimic surroundings like Sociopaths.

It's always been the case that some disorders are cooler than others, just like some illnesses are. And for much the same reason.

I.e. (and I'm talking stereotypically here, not accurately) aspergers tends to cause social awkwardness - they willl still socialise but in sometimes slightly inappropriate ways, they can be hard to talk to, and they can worry people (i.e. avoiding/constantly holding eye contact, not picking up on signals, odd conversations.) Sociopathy leads people to more often avoid socialising - so they are considered enigmatic, not awkward. Also, sociopaths are more often capable of understanding societies unwritten rules, even if they don't follow them. People with this type of anti-social personality disorder often have a lot of charm. Anti-social personalities also seem to have more control (they can have charm, or manipulate, so they can choose to be social) whereas aspergers do not - they are unable to socialise without special teaching. Being out of control like that is not as glamourous as appearing not to care.

Also, Aspergers is not an antisocial disease. It's a developmental disorder that effects your ability to socialise with others. Whereas sociopathy is a personality disorder (technically it's not anti-social personality disorder). So Aspergers is more likely to be combined with other developmental or learning problems (especially language processing) which, again, is considered either strange or looked down on. Anti-social personality disorders are not, as much, so these people hold their own in their peer group better, so have higher percieved status.

I don't think anyone admires real life sociopaths like Gacy or Bundy. I totally agree with regard to movies. The director can make the most evil character look cool. For example, Joe Pesci in "Goodfellas" The perfect example is the hit man in "No Country fo Old Men".

Because antisocial personality disorder is poorly understood and people think that the manipulative natures is really clever. The only two "cool" ones I can think of would be the Joker and Hannibal Lecter, and they're not even true sociopaths.

We don't find anyone like that "cool", human kind just has a large curiosity of them. They are interesting. They are easily noticed because they stand out from the crowd. You have the wrong idea, they are not noticed because they are "cool". They are noticed because they act differently then the general population. Therefore, they end up on the television a lot.

Wrong. Most sociopaths don't out themselves as sociopaths (I'm an exception).
The people who are seen on the news probably have Antisocial Personality Disorder, which causes repeated acts of criminal behavior. It is different than sociopathy (which is more a personality type than a disorder).

I havn't heard of people thinking sociopaths are "cool" (aside from myself, being one).

When I tell people that I believe sociopaths to be the "Alphas of our society" as Jessica put it, I'm usually met with anger and people saying that sociopaths are a bad thing.

So, I don't know where your getting this from, but if I had to point my finger at any reason, I'd point it at Sherlock. ("I'm not a psychopath, I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research!").

However, I am very gratified to see people on here saying that sociopaths are "cool", or something similar.

  • I have never noticed that. Both are sad but sociopaths are scary !

    • ?6 years agoReport

I wouldn't say sociopathy is "sad". Its just different. Like Islam, or African Americans, or people with MPD. Its not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, with the exception of the small percent of sociopaths who are killers. But thats about 1% of 50,000.

Because people have this idea that mysteriousness is cool.
