Its because the war isnt being faught to be won, its being faught to be prolonged, just like Vietnam.

The same reason why no one was able to eliminate the 'resistance' in France, Vietnam, Algeria, Israel, East Germany, etc. A foreign occupation serves as a catalyst for the population to rally against. Over the course of time, the resistance will grow stronger, not weaker, as resistance itself becomes a part of the local culture.

Iraq is a particularly interesting example. We now know that W lied about the presence of Al Qiada in Iraq. But the US invasion has only served to wipe out any power structure in the country, helped create a thriving group of Al Qiada cells, and left much of the country under the control of various warlords, similar to Somalia.

So much for W's promise to have the troops home by Christmas. That was in 2002, by the way.

We've been there for 7 years...and it would have been done in Afghanistan if we didn't have a moron of a President (GW Bush) that wanted so badly to invade the same Country his daddy did that he split his forces up and lied to the American people so he could get his other war (Iraq).

Not enough personnel on the ground. Basically you kick the insurgence out of one area then leave to go on to the next. The insurgence moves back into the area you left. Ideally we would maintain the areas we take to keep insurgence out until they have a force strong enough to take care of themselves.

Because unlike the insurgency, we follow the Geneva Convention. They hide among the population, tying our hands. If we threw the rules out of the window or the insurgents stood up to us like men instead of cowards then we would have wiped them out YEARS ago.
