Pleural empyema is pus in the lungs and around the lungs. It is like pneumonia in a way, but significantly more serious in most cases.

Although obviously pneumonia can be fatal as well. Often a chest tube has to be inserted to drain the pus off or even surgery in cases of empyema. In an otherwise healthy person, antibiotics are usually sufficient to resolve pneumonia. Bronchitis is simply irritation of the bronchial tubes and can be mild, moderate or severe.

Empyema is serious and you are not out walking around with an empyema. You are in the hospital with high doses of IV antibiotics and have a pulmonary specialist working trying to clear it up. Its life threatening. Bronchitis is in the bronchs. Its not life threatening usually and can be cured with oral antibiotics.

I agree with Supervib above me. Obviously he is in medicine or has had this procedure.

Empyema is not pneumonia but has symptoms of pneumonia.

Bronchitis is when your bronchial tubes becomes inflamed and you usually cough a lot.

They're both respiratory diseases usually cause by smoking.
