The formula for the surface area of a rectangular prism is:

SA = 2lh + 2wh + 2lw

However, since this has a square base, l = w. Therefore,

SA = 2lh + 2lh + 2l^2

If x = length and h = height, substitute!

SA = 2xh + 2xh + 2x^2

==> SA = 2x^2 + 4xh

Therefore, the surface area in terms of x and h is 2x^2 + 4xh.
