Are the Swiss Guards actual guards?

These guys are suppose to protect the pope.

But how?

They carry spears and dress in that puffy yellow red out fight. i wouldn't trust my life to body guards like that ( especially in these times with terrorist and all)

Do they actaully protect the pope , like carry any other weapons ( gun, gernade, etc) is there a bullet proof vest under their out fit?

or are they more ceremonial guards and just show respect and repersent the pope

thanx

yes very much so , their corp have all died defending the pope , they take it seriously

its like in england they dont ride horses into battle , they use tanks , the horse are just for ceremony, nor do they wear bright red and have bear skin hats in battle just for ceremony

most of tehguard has done national service in teh swiss army

Besides their traditional arms the Swiss Guard also has contemporary non-ceremonial small arms like SIG P225 pistols and SIG SG 550 assault rifles at its disposal for security duties.[4] These small arms are also in use by the Swiss military. The Guard also engages in yearly rifle competition and receives self-defense instruction, as well as basic instruction on defensive bodyguard tactics similar to those used in the protection of many heads of state.[5]

Yup they do more than stand there and look pretty (those outfits were designed by Michelangelo) The men who are Swiss guards have all had basic training from the Swiss army.

Yes,,,don't let the costumes fool you, those guys are trained by the Secret Service, among others. For every one you see in a puffy suit there are two in you don't see in plain clothes.
