How popular is Democracy, really, in the US ?

When the decision that the Supreme Court of California would be upheld, an issue decided on by referendum and constituial amendement is the airtight democratic fashion imaginable was even consdiered being overidden by unelected "interpreters" is beyond me, but I've noticed a lot of criticism for this... show more When the decision that the Supreme Court of California would be upheld, an issue decided on by referendum and constituial amendement is the airtight democratic fashion imaginable was even consdiered being overidden by unelected "interpreters" is beyond me, but I've noticed a lot of criticism for this decsion. Now the gay marriage issue is one thing, a perfectly legitmate debate, that is not the problem here. But that a wide range pf people would criticize the court for going in line with a constitutional amendment and referendum, one starts to wonder how many people are willing to put idealogy above democracy.
