The metro-link is L.A. and Orange County, but it connects to the Coaster and then the Trolley. There is a Trolley stop at the Convention Center.

Metrolink only goes as far as Oceanside, from there you would need to transfer to The Coaster. Amtrak is the direct link to from LA / Orange County to downtown San Diego (Sant Fe Station). From Santa Fe Station you can take a trolley to the Convention Center. If you are going to Comic Con or a Padres game, they run special event trains (Red Line) that run direct from Santa Fe Station to the Convention Center and Petco Park. If not, you need to take a very short walk across the street to American Plaza and catch the Orange Line, which is the normal service to the Convention Center.
FYI The tracks you see on google maps are a combination of railroad and trolley tracks. Both go right in front of the Convention Center. Only freight trains head south of Santa Fe Station, passengers take the trolley.

The Metrolink does not travel to San Diego. The last stop from LA/OC is Oceanside. From Oceanside, you transfer to the Coaster train and that will take you to downtown San Diego.
Or just take Amtrak Surfliner from Union Station to Santa Fe Depot downtown

I believe the only train station in San Diego is the Amtrak Station which is downtown, a few blocks away from the convention center. I think I have seen MetroLink trains there. Sorry, good luck! Call them?Source(s): 1050 Kettner Blvd # 1 San Diego, CA 92101 (619) 239-9021
