Ripping Audio from a DVD using Audacity?

I have a DVD video that was recorded of our chorus group's concert performance. I would like to be able to listen to the music on my ipod, but unfortunately, no one recorded the audio only, just the video. I understand that it is possible to extract only the soundtrack from a DVD using Audacity. How would I go about doing this?

Well let me answer your question with out referring you to other programs, since that was your original question. Unlike the others below I will do that. What you need to do first is set audacity to only record what is coming out of your speakers. If you don’t know how that is done your can go to my website and it will show you with a picture its real easy.

After you get the settings changed pull up the DVD that you want the audio from as well as audacity and push play also push record on audacity it will than record what is coming from your speakers only. Then you can do some simple highlight and cut editing to perfect the songs you want to record.

Then export them as MP3 or WAV or what ever you would like if you do not know how to install lame mp3 encoder into audacity so that you can export them out as mp3 you can also visit

If you thought that this was helpful feel free to stop by my website and check out the reviews and tutorials that I give away free its a hobby of mine so check it out!!

I don't know any fancy tech-related way to do this but if you play a music file while Audacity is on and your microphone is on, it'll record it and you can choose from a mp3 or wav file to save it on.

as ipod accepts mp4 format, you just need a converter that will go from dvd to ipod mp4 and then transfer the output mp4 videos to your ipod with the sync of itunes library. I prefer using clone2go dvd to ipod converter as it combines three main features into one program:

    1. rip dvd to ipod

    2. convert video to ipod

    3. download youtube videos to ipod

here is the step by step tutorial that shows you how to rip dvd, convert video and download youtube video to ipod:
