Yes, the pirated version really works if AND ONLY IF you have a real CD key

    Try this key XP8BF-F8HPF-PY6BX-K24PJ-TWT6M.

If you want to make your XP version genuine try this:

    1)Open Run

    2)Copy this and paste it %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

    3) Press enter

4)) the activation screen will come up, click on register over telephone, then click on CHANGE PRODUCT KEY, enter in this key: JG28K-H9Q7X-BH6W4-3PDCQ-6XBFJ.

    This will do the trick

No, the reinstall cd will find the same pirated version and won't fix it because it can't. You've now found the BIG reason why pirated software simply doesn't work. Nothing recognizes it, and the previous answerer was right, when you are online, it can be detected that the version is pirated. You can't get updates, so nothing is compatible with it. I'm sorry, but you are stuck unless you can get a low price LEGIT XP. You can still buy them from buy.com, sometimes SoftwareOutlet has them. If you really hunt, you can find them. Occasionally they are sold on Amazon, but stay away from buying them from craigslist or ebay. They are more likely to be another pirated version.

Yes, you can reinstall with a pirated version but you may encounter problems with Windows updates. If you're online, Pirated version can be detected.
