How is a good drummer good?

Out of curiosity, I'm wondering this....I'm not a drummer or anything, but I've heard that the drummer of this band (you can hear it the best in this song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l7yjJT2RBI

is better than a lot of common ones.

How? Don't judge based on the rest of the band, just the quality of the drumming.

The best drummers are able to work percussion into the music, rather than force it. They are considerate of the music itself, and decide the appropriate percussion to add. They don't become "the stars" of the music or try to "busy it up" too much or take attention away from anyone else in the band. They try to balance their talents and creativity with the song's intent. You have to have your chops down and have a good touch to the instruments.

Check out Phil Collins - he is one of the most versatile. Carl Palmer is also considered one of the best. Danny Carey from Tool is awesome. Bill Buford from King Crimson and Yes. John Bonham is one of my personal favorites. Check out Carter Beauford from Dave Mathews band (he did an interview about how he integrates his drumming into the music).

How well they make the drumming appeal to the feel of the rest of the song and it's ability to compliment the other instruments and dictate the speed of the song are the main factors I consider when I say a drummer is good.

I love this drummer, the band, not as much. You can feel the drumming basically when he drums.

A good drummer can have speed and still keep rhythm. Try listening to these songs and pay attention to the drummers.

In One by Metallica, the drummer is using both for bass. That gives him more speed. The other two drummers have done this before.

A good drummer is an opinion, but the way I see it is a bit different. In my eyes, a good drummer is someone who isn't mainstream. Unlike everyone above me, you gotta see that SPEED is not nearly everything. Creativity is everything to a drummer, I am one and the best beats aren't fast, but unique. Creativity, and uniqueness are a drummers best element, although speed does help.
