I wanted to know how good I can become at fighting. Another reason was because I thought it would be fun. And another reason was because I wanted a chance and the right to one day face the guys I see on tv.

Maybe not much of a reason for some people but I'm working very hard to achieve what I want. If he/she thinks they're more dedicated to training then they can give me thumbs down. All the people here deserves thumbs up in my opinion for giving their true feelings to why they wanted to start martial arts.

I dont think you can find a race or group who hasn't some form of combat hand to hand in their history. Some of them have evolved into mere cultural displys with little practical use only seen at festivals and such. Argentina Rocca a well known wrestler in the 50s when it was still real had both elbows dislocated by some skinny tribes man in BRAZIL . As for muslims perhaps the TURKISH form of wrestling could be considered their martial art as the TURKS have practiced it since before ALEXANDER THE GREATS time may have even had some influence on PANKRATOS and GRECO ROMAN wrestling.

Actually I don't practice martial arts...it is my way of life from when I wake up to when I fall asleep and even then I have dreams from time to time involving martial arts....but to answer it is because I love martial arts.

Same reason I know how to work on cars, use a firearm, find nourishment in the woods, build a shelter, or treat a wound. Chances are if a problem comes up, no matter where I am or who I am with, I'll probably be the one who needs to deal with it.

My parents started me in martial arts when I was 6, so it's just kind of 2nd nature now.

Martial arts is a way of life but not something to blind myself with pride or ego. They can be applied to many things in life... subtle things such as art, dancing, humility, etc.

Quite simply because I love it.

    Why do painters paint?

Why do race car drivers drive?

    Why do photographers take pictures?

Really it boils down to who we are and what we have fallen in love with

To learn to defend myself and improve in my fighting abilities. To have some fun. To socialise. To improve my CV. To have mental discipline. To feed my ego. To keep fit. To do something useful in my spare time. To WIN in life. : D
