Why do people in America think that Socialism is a bad word?

Republicans say that Barack Obama has a Socialist agenda, as if it is an insult. First off, NOBODY outside of America would EVER call Obama a Socialist. If you're using the actual definition of Socialism, it can obviously be seen in America in programs like Welfare, Social Security, Income Taxes, etc. When... show more Republicans say that Barack Obama has a Socialist agenda, as if it is an insult. When the word Socialism is used in America, people talk about the governments in the past that were Socialist and did bad things or failed. But ALL of those governments were ran by Dictators! However, Socialist governments like Sweden are Democracies that have thrived under that system. A recent study says that Swedish people are much happier than Americans.

So what is socialism a bad word? it simply means that people who can afford to pay a little more do, so that people who can't can still have happy and respectful lives. we are the most powerful country in the world, and the fact that some guy can only buy 4 cars instead of 5 so that 20 people can eat for a year does not hurt my feelings A BIT.

the "they're lazy and dumb" argument isn't realistic. for every dumb and lazy poor person, there are 10 more poor people who work 40 - 60 hours a week and raise a family at the same time.
