More than likely they sent you the check because the hospital where you received services/treatment is not on the "preferred provider" list of your insurance company. They sent it to you to sign over to the hospital. It's not yours to keep.

No, but you will owe the hospital.

You said it is only a portion, will they pay all of it eventually? If not then negotiate the bill with the hospital, since you hold the money they might accept a lesser total. Don't volunteer info about the funds you receive if you intend to negotiate.

    Good Luck!

    Illegal? Probably not.

    Unethical.....ehhhhhh

The union sent you the money (I assume) to help offset the cost of the hospital bill, that's the reason they sent it, not to pay other stuff, no cable, no high speed internet......you get my point.

the check is in your name. You are the only one that can cash it.

But you should use the money to pay the bill... its not going to magically disappear.

If it's your name on the check, then you're the only one who *can* cash it.
