Here is the link for a list of 200 Significant Australians.

    http://www.whitehat.com.au/australia/people/People...

Here are a few names from the list -

    Bert Hinkler (Aviator)

Sir Charles Kingsford Smith ('Smithy') (aviator)

    Nancy Bird Walton (aviator)

    Dr Tim Flannery (scientist, author)

Lord Howard Florey (medical researcher) whose work resulted in the saving of millions of lives.

    Fred Hollows (opthalmologist)

Sir Marcus Oliphant (nuclear physicist, Governor)

    Tom Keneally (writer)

    Morris West (novelist)

    Patrick White (writer)

Here is another list this time of Australian Inventions, Discoveries & Innovations.

    http://www.whitehat.com.au/australia/Inventions/In...

Here's just a few from a long, long list on the website -

    - The Combine Harvester - Hugh Victor McKay in 1882.

    - Black Box Flight Recorder - Dr David Warren in 1958.

    - The Inflatable Aircraft Escape Slide & Raft - Jack Grant in 1965.

    - The Electric Drill - patented by Arthur James in 1889.

    - Blast Glass (also known as Stop Shot). - A ballistic and blast resistant glass system. Unlike conventional bullet proof glass it incorporates an air cavity to help absorb the shock wave of explosions. It almost certainly saved many lives in the terrorist bombing of the Australian Embassy in Djakarta in 2004. Invented by Peter Stephinson.

    - The Bionic Ear- the cochlear implant was invented by a team led by Professor Graeme Clark in 1978.

    - Spray-on-skin for burns victims developed by Dr Fiona Wood.

Rolf Harris WAS born in Australia. Whether he counts as having contributed much to the world or not, I don't know.

On the other hand, Nicole Kidman, Olivia Newton John, the lead singer of Men at Work (Colin Hay) and all of the Bee Gees were NOT born in Australia. I'd still count all of them as Australian, because thats where they got their starts in their respective careers.

While we're in the entertainment field, another famous Australian actor is Errol Flynn.

Victor Chang was responsible for developing Australia's National Heart Transplant Programme.

He was also working on the development of an artificial heart at the time of his murder. Because

of Victor's hard work almost 300 successful heart, heart-lung and single lung transplants have been performed since 1984.
