Social studies books are totally boring accounts. Try to learn more about the people you're reading about - check our wikipedia and other sites. For example, Ben Franklin was a total playboy, and he had really bad gout. People are LOTS more complicated than they tell you - look them up on the net, and try to find some more exciting accounts of the wars you may be studying. Personalize it as much as you can, and that'll help you remember. (think about this: learning about how Stonewall Jackson was totally prissy and sucked lemons throughout battles. That's more fun than memorizing exactly where and when he got killed. Oh yeah - and his arm is buried separately from him. You can find it in VA).
