What is the 'GOP'? (When talking about government/politics)?

The news keeps talking about the 'GOP' and no one at my house can figure out what it is. Come someone explain it to stupid people?

It is the Republican party. GOP stands for Grand Old Party. Something from years and years ago that has carried over. I didn't know either until I heard it explained on CNN during the election.

These days it should stand for Going Out of Power.

They have become way to liberal in an attempt to "have a big tent" like their enemies the Liberal Democrats told them to do.

And the Republicans are stupid enough, to fall for it while the Democrats have always maintained a very tiny tent in which anyone who does not toe the radical liberal line is ostracized as Joe Leiberman was for siding with Republicans on one single subject.
