I have a New Orleans accent. For some reason they are completely unique from other southern accents, which all seem to sound similar.

As far as the origins of the accents New Orleans was part of the Louisiana territory owned and governed by the French and Spanish up until the Louisiana purchase in 1803. Culturally and historically New Orleans traditions and customs originate from these two nations. Perhaps the accents reflect that, but I'm not sure.
